Student Spotlight: Undergraduate Student, Ruvi Ranatunga

My name is Ruvi Ranatunga and I am a senior double majoring in Religious Studies and Neuroscience. I'm from Dayton, Ohio and am also in the Frederick Honors College. I chose to major in Religious Studies because it is a field that is often overlooked when discussing history but is essential to understanding how/why humanity exists today. Religious Studies uses a global perspective that makes it easy to incorporate my own personal background and life experiences into the material we study. Majoring in Religious Studies alongside Neuroscience has given me the opportunity to have a diverse and well-rounded undergraduate academic path. I have been able to do two semesters of research through the department at Pitt and also in Israel with the help of the Israel Nationality Room Scholarship and the Gilboa & Halpern Jewish Studies grant. I also had the opportunity to present my research from the Fall of 2021 at the Spring 2022 undergraduate research fair. After graduating in the Spring of 2023, I hope to attend graduate school in the fall and work towards earning my PhD in Neuroscience. Majoring in Religious Studies has expanded my worldview, helped me develop research skills, and given me a path to pursue a topic I love learning about.
